Abstract:
The EU is challenged in terms of accountability. The European Parliament is generally considered too weak and unable to play a significant role to effectively hold accountable EU executive bodies. This prompts the question whether its right of inquiry should be strengthened, in order to address the apparent accountability deficit of the EU. Based on a comparison of national systems, especially Germany and France, the proposed research will advance recommendations and proposals to further develop the right to inquiry of the Parliament, herewith strengthening the accountability of the EU.
