Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to examine issues that arise from the interface between upstream petroleum industry and environmental law and policy, with a view to contributing to the wider debate among stakeholders, as well as in academic circles. One the one hand, according to some cases and statistics in China, it is an urgent task to legislate some environmental mechanisms in the field of oil and gas exploitation sector. On the other hand, China now must focus its attention on implementing and enforcing the laws by strengthening and reorganizing the regulatory institutions. The specific purposes of the study are to evaluate effects of Chinas current environmental regulations and policies which relate to the extraction phase of oil and gas industry, and to explore the challenges to environmental regulations of China in such field, and to analyze reasons for these challenges as well as to account for specific legal measures to achieve the sustainable development principle in the field of extraction phase of oil and gas industry.
